چکیده

Aims of the Unit The overall purpose of this unit is to get you to read some writings by feminists and see the profoundly new and perhaps unsettling epistemological ideas they have put forward. We hope that by the end of the unit no one will characterise feminist philosophers of science as a unified school. Objectives By the end of this unit you should be able to:) See some limitations of grounded theory from specific feminist perspectives;) Identify gender essentialism and question its assumptions;) Tell about why post-modern feminists do not see any solid foundation for epistemology;) Explain two aspects of feminist epistemology besides social constructionism, from among the following: standpoint theory; the personal being political; and epistemological relativism. In this Unit we will cover the rest of Smith's Chapter 7, and we will also cover a little additional ground based on research being done by academics at the University of Bradford and elsewhere in paradigms not treated much by Smith. I will use as a framework for discussion Anne Scott's spectrum from anti-foundationalism to foundationalism. She has suggested that different schools of thought can be placed along a spectrum, although of course they differ in more respects than merely the simplicity of their ontology. Her diagram is shown in Figure 7.1 below, and I then discuss the different sub-positions of different groups of feminists in the sections that follow.

These implications revolve around four core themes: that feminist research is situated in the margins, that current gender and MIS research is not adequately problematized, that feminist research questions the legitimacy and appropriaten...

Pluralism, Tenancy and Poverty: Cultivating Open-Mindedness in Poverty Studies

Theoretical pluralism adds depth to the mixing of methods in development studies. In this paper, pluralism is grounded in an assumption that society has both structure and complexity. Interdisciplinary research generates a dialogue across epistemological chasms. Such research can be valued for its discursive bridging function as well as for improved measurement. Divergent schools of thought can...

Exploring the dynamics of gender, feminism and entrepreneurship: advancing debate to escape a dead end?

Contrary to the neo-liberal thesis that entrepreneuring is an open and accessible endeavour where personal effort alone determines reward and status, it has been demonstrated that there is a persistent, but occluded, gender bias within the entrepreneurial discourse. Accordingly, women are positioned as lacking and incomplete men; however, despite calls to employ feminist theory as an analytical...

The Quantitative/Qualitative Debate and Feminist Research: A Subjective View of Objectivity

Research methods are "technique(s) for ... gathering data" (HARDING 1986) and are generally dichotomised into being either quantitative or qualitative. It has been argued that methodology has been gendered (OAKLEY 1997; 1998), with quantitative methods traditionally being associated with words such as positivism, scientific, objectivity, statistics and masculinity. In contrast, qualitative meth...
